24 Days in MidTown

Day 1 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

When Ken and I first started wandering around MidTown, I got the idea of putting a photo a day of the murals you see here up on my Facebook page. I’m at day twenty-four and I thought it would be a good idea to find out a little about them.

I’ve learned that they are painted by local artists and that taggers won’t tag them, because they respect other people’s art. I’ve also learned that I’m not the only person who finds them fascinating, because as Ken and I meander around MidTown, we see other photographers making photos of them.

We have done three photo shoots in front of these murals in the last three weeks and our subjects love posing in front of them. Usually, we do our engagement and senior photos at either the Truckee River downtown or in one of Reno’s many parks, especially San Rafael and Idlewild, or up at Lake Tahoe, because we love shooting at Sand Harbor.

Of course, we also shoot our happy couples and seniors at a location of their choosing, if they have one, but now they have another, much more interesting choice, because MidTown is full of photographic opportunities.

Whether you’re a future bride and groom looking for engagement or save the date photos for your wedding, or a senior looking for something different, I would encourage you to give MidTown a chance. I think you’d like it.

Day 3 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This is Day Three of my Twenty-Four Days in MidTown. I just love how the bottle neck is the chimney on this one.

Day 4 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This mural of the gorgeous red poppy is on the garage of the house two doors down from us, so I didn't have to go too far for my Day Four photo.

Day 5 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This photo, which is Day Five, is not one of our MidTown murals, but I liked it a lot. This big sock monkey hangs on the ceiling of Happy Happy Joy Joy, which is a great little toy store. Which is, of course, in MidTown.

Day 6 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

Another shot which is not a mural, but it's close. So close, in fact, that I chose it for Day Six.

Day 7a in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

I saw the faces reflected in the windows of this building and they kind've reminded me of a mural, so I chose this for one half of Day Seven.

Day 7b in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

And here are those reflected faces (from the trees opposite) that make up the second half of Day Seven.

Day 8 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

Here I am on the Eighth Day and I'm wondering why these rocks don't tumble down.

Day 9 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

On my Ninth Day wandering around in MidTown, I came upon this mural of a boy and girl playing the piano. Whether you’re a future Mozart or future bride and groom, looking for save the date photos for your wedding, Ken and I are here for you. Just imagine having your photo taken in MidTown. It could be wonderful.

Day 10 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

For Day Ten, I chose this wind vane, which is outside of our art museum. If your get a chance, you should go. It’s small and nice. I just love it. I also love being a photographer in Reno, especially in the MidTown District.

Yes, I know, the sign says Arts District, but it’s in MidTown, not in the ArtTown District, which is north of the river downtown.

Day 11 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

I’m a seamstress as well as a photographer, so I couldn’t help but love this decorated old Singer. My mom could really make her sewing sing with a machine like that.

I would just love to photograph a sewing circle in front of those painted out windows. This Day Eleven photo, just might be my very favorite of them all.

Day 12 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This girl appears to be peering out from behind a pair of blinds and she has beautiful eyes, which draw you right in. She is my Day Twelve photo, which puts my half why through my Twenty-Four Days in MidTown. I’d love to see her in real life and to photograph her.

Day 13 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This bus is riding along behind, you guessed it, The Twisted Minds Glass & Tattoo Studio and Recycled Records. The characters riding it are overjoyed, because they’re in my Day Thirteen photo. I wonder if they know that’s an unlucky number

Well, Mr. Death, who is riding in back probably does, but I don’t think he cares.

Day 14 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

After two weeks of taking these photos, I’m reminded that the year is almost over and Ken and I are going to have to deal with our taxes. Yes, those are certainly two things which haunt us all, Death and Taxes.

Great name for a tavern, though.

Day 15 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

I’m back behind Recycled Records again on Day Fifteen. I was going to move that trash can out of the photo, but then I realized that this fixture that’s been painted to look like a giant 50’s or 60’s stereo, was actually designed to hold the trash, so that can, in my eyes anyway, became an important part of the photograph.

Day 16 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

This bluebird perched on the horn of a ram’s skull is on the garage door of the house next door, so I see it everyday and it’s my Day Seventeen photo.

Day 17 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

Saw this painted fence on Day Seventeen and couldn’t stop laughing.

Day 18 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

The day after I took this, my Day Eighteen photo, they fenced off the parking lot and the building. I hope they’re not going to tear it down, because I really like those musical notes.

Day 19 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

I really like this mural, because I’m a wedding photographer and I do a lot of engagement shoots. I must confess though, I’ve never seen an engagement ring quite this big. That sucker is huge and it's the subject of my Day Nineteen photo.

Day 20 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

Reno, Nevada, MidTown, to be exact, that’s where this mural is, just like it says on the wall. Look at the right side of the mural, under the plane, see the baseball? Gotta love the Aces if you live in MidTown. I do love the Aces and that’s why this is my photo for Day Twenty.

Day 21 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

I will admit that I don’t quite understand this mural, but I love, love, love the colors, so it’s the subject of my Day Twenty-One Photo.

Day 22 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

It’s Day Twenty-Two and I happened across this gorgeous portrait, so I took a photo of it, sort of a portrait of a portrait.

Day 23 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

What girl wouldn’t swoon over a pair of pink high heels like these? Shoes, that’s the subject of Day Twenty-Three.

Day 24 in MIdTown, by Vesta Irene, Reno Photographer

And now here I am at Day Twenty-Four, showing my little friend Rosie how I’d like her to pose. She did great, by the way, which gives me an excuse to invite you to down to MidTown to have your photograph made by me.

Who else?

Really, MidTown is a great place to be photographed. It’s a great place to hang out. It’s a great place to live. As Ken would say, “It’s wonderful to be alive in MidTown."
